Whether it's on the Korean peninsula or in the states, Monday means you should get under the hood of your military vehicle and perform Preventive Checks and Operator Maintenance (PMCS).
On August 11, the standard was no different. Soldiers from the 210th Field Artillery Brigade at Camp Casey, South Korea, spend the morning digging inside their Hummers for fluid leaks and mechanical problems before venturing out on the road.
Armed with their proven technical manuals and equipment maintenance and inspection sheets, or DA form 5988-E, soldiers were able to find and document any problems with their vehicles, generators or trailers. Sometimes they also have a second breakfast.
"I've had the misfortune of testing every fluid the cars run on," said Sgt. Charles Descalzi of Seattle, Wash., a wheeled vehicle mechanic assigned to the Support Battalion, 70th Brigade, 210th FA Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division. "The antifreeze and transmission fluids are pretty sweet, almost like candy. But the oil is not very good.

Although the taste of victory is close at hand, the consequences of executing the PMCS incorrectly can lead to serious consequences.
"If a tire goes down because someone didn't check the torque, or a car in the convoy breaks down, you're easy prey," Descalzi said. "You don't want to be on the front line, risking an easily preventable accident."
Consistent and accurate use of the PMCS every Monday is one way the 210th FA Brigade commanders can keep the unit on alert.
"By doing these equipment checks, Soldiers develop confidence and trust in their vehicles," said 1st Lt.
